Re: Thinking about Fighters (FQ)

The pinning mechanic should be tied to the ability to disrupt the GB's drive field. Something that cannot be done to larger ships but something like Stellaris' FTL snare that slows down or stops GB's. It could be short ranged (requiring the fighter to be in the hex with the GB). It could be an area ...

Re: How Important Are SRW To LRW Designs?

I don't generally put SRW on a LRW ship. DDs at the start are the LRW platform so I keep CTs with SRW and DDs with LRW. Sometimes I roll on the NPR design table if I want to shake it up. But then I tried started with G as my starting SRW weapon (don't do it) because sometimes you have to do odd thin...

Re: How many have used the V2 Raiding Rules?

I use the raiding rules all the time to see if a fleet surveying the system can be detected and/or detect any FT traffic in the system. With WP visibility rules and chances for missed WP, I use these rules all the time. Most players don't raid so much as take the opportunity to find FTs wandering ar...

Re: Some Thoughts on Starfire and Gaming in the 1980s

For those that don't see where the inexpensive games have gone, you should check out Print and Play games. Many designers have released their games as Print and Play as a precursor to a Kickstarter (getting the design right before making the game with the expensive bits). Cheapass games is still aro...

Re: Did Khanate Orions inspire the Kilrathi?

I would have to say the Kzinti were the inspiration for both races. Starfleet Battles picked up the Kzinti from a single episode of Star Trek the animated series (The Slaver Weapon).

Re: Research costs as EL increases : breakthroughs

Another reason that breakthroughs do not need to be increased in cost. You need more of them as you open more trees and have more research locations. Thus, Breakthroughs scale because you need to be spending more on chances to get them because you never have enough breakthroughs in the mid to late g...

Re: Nerfing Squadrons to reasonable levels

The ships and results are all from a early ULTRA game that transitioned from GSF so I might have to go back to the player to get a better handled on what happened. I looked at my records and the empire didn't start using ast until later so the ships posted were the anti-GB forces in use. In regards ...

Re: Nerfing Squadrons to reasonable levels

You are forgetting that you can place 7 of these into a datalink and that adds up on the first shot. It's possible the difference is that in the game we were playing fleet sizes were large enough that the NPR just could not bring enough GB to help even though the battles being fought should have bee...

Re: Nerfing Squadrons to reasonable levels

When you build ships that are optimized against GB, GB can be very weak. So weak that I had to stop allowing ships to fire first in my ULTRA games as the players in the games I was running just mopped the floor with their smaller ships designed to destroy GBs. I don't recall this being the case in ...

Re: Nerfing Squadrons to reasonable levels

While GB do well against the ships that started the thread, those ships do not look like ships optimized for anti-GB work. Was the cost of the GB carrier included in the GB cost to balance? This alone means that GBs will always be facing a larger force. The benefits of GB is that the carrier can qui...
