And a bit of a teaser.

I found a free excel 2007 plugin that lets me build dynamic grouped maps. It's pretty nifty!

Look what I made!

It's just a prototype, and things'll change, but this does quick and dirty nicely :)

Ta Dah!

http://nodexl.codeplex.com/

Install procedure is VERY simple. Just download and run it, then start it from the shortcut it installs.

I will be honest, this thing is overly powerful and it took me a good hour and change to figure out what buttons do what. But, I can suggest a few things that can at least get the basics up and running.

0) This is usable only for Office 2007+. It installs a new tab along with the View, Developer and Data tabs called "NodeXL".

1) There's a simple "sample" document that comes with the tool, accessable via the NodeXL tab. That gives you a basic thing to poke with, and figure out what does what.

2) You input the links via the "Edges" tab, with each link going in the Vertex columns. The system DOES tolerate duplicates gracefully IE linking A->B, and then B<-A later will not cause it to explode. This might factor into some options with the link lines that can indicate directionality.

3) To label the actual star systems, you do that via the "Vertices" tab. That should populate naturally once you've input the edges and asked it to generate a map.

4) The website shows some REALLY impressive tricks this thing can do on the fly, and I know I haven't played with this in the slightest.

Very interesting!

I'm going to post this to the FB page for people who view that there. Thanks for sharing Xveers, that's a really neat tool.

A little preview of what I've been working on. I was inspired today and I bashed this out in short order.

Time from initial build to this render: 4 hours (including dinner break and general faffing about).

Other than being in excel is there some reason this works better than graphviz maps? From what I can tell, the formatting in both are comparable.

None that I can see. I'm just familiar with Excel and it was something I found in about 5 mins of googling.

Xveers,

Thanks for the Story update !

Time seems to get more limited and more precious as I've aged these last few years; so for all of the Authors at this site, I thank you again for the time and effort you have given to your Turn outline, short story, or 100+ episode Saga. It always makes me feel better (Even when the subject matter gets a little dark). All of you folk who hit the keyboard and put stuff out there, you ARE making a difference in the world. And some of you might be developing a second or third vocation as well. Kudos !
