Same with me. The big battles were back in 2nd ed with my new empires campaigns. One of my players loved to build swarms of small fry. His idea was to put up so many targets that a good portion of the gnats would be able to close to point blank and blast away.

My biggest 3rd ed battle was probably the tournament at Atlanticon 1992. I don't remember exactly what I had in my TFN task force, but my friend had 4 RPSA carriers plus about 6 -8 CL's and DD's as escorts. My goal was to hold for 20 turns (not realistic against a competent opponent). My friend sent in a mass fighter strike and all of his escort vessels, keeping them between me and his carriers. As I only had a single TFN carrier my fighters were badly outnumbered. I decided to kill as many fighters and cripple the escorts as tactical victory was out of the question. I lost my entire task force, but took out most of the fighters and gutted the escorts. It turned out that we were the only pair to actually read our mission briefings and take them seriously. Our battle was bloody and decisive. I failed on a tactical level but the GM said that I effectively got a strategic victory as the RPSA task force had no combat worthy escorts and less than a single carrier's worth of fighters.

about 30 ships on a side, TL5, was around 20 min to set up (counting printing SSDs), and 30 min to play, two experienced players, no ammo tracking, book ships only (so no SSD checking).

No. Just a TL and budget. A not uncommon mode for meet-up tactical games.

For me it was Operation Distant Howl, also known as the Battle of the Wall. Allied forces where:

6100 drones
7 DN
28 BB
60 BC
7 CA
27 CL
40 DD
44 FG
127 CT

Everything transited the warp point, never even got an Omega Drone back.

We did statistical damage, didn't bother with dice except for initiative. IIRC it took two days over a weekend via IM.

Really is that true? I am so surprised to see the stats you have shared.

Why are you surprised? I'm just curious... this obviously isn't a small battle, but there are many scenarios in the supplements that are much larger. Although 6100 drones... that IS impressive :)

What surprises me is the large number of FG and CT involved. Were they intended as EW platforms to confuse defending AP?

Usually its simply a matter of how fast they can be built. You can generally build 5 FG for every BB, after all.

Yeah, I'm finally back (again)! Sometimes, life (and 9yo son's) don't leave you time to play SF and earn a paycheck. :/

No, really! Matt actually made me an admin here!

I would guess it to be a swarm of small hulls, with large hulls for the initial transits. And that says "drones" so I would guess they were initial bombardment through the WP. Of course, I could be totally wrong. :)

The bigger takeaway is that it sounded like he doesn't know what's on the other side...

The drones I can understand. The small fry remind me of what the Star Union did to the Bugs in Shiva. Those swarms would be nasty if they were designed as jammer platforms. They could in theory degrade the defenses enough to allow bigger ships to transit intact.
