Very unfortunate for humanity, he has inspired so many people and advanced our knowledge in so many ways. But here's a drink to hoping he's found a peace and freedom he didn't have in this life.

You know it eventually happens to all of us, but, dang, it's a bummer.
On the other hand, over on Google Plus someone posted a drawing of him getting up from the wheelchair and walking; in to the infinity of space.
I think it is not hyperbole to say he was a remarkable man with a remarkable life.

Despite retaining his technical listing as an Anglican, he had no belief in an afterlife

USA Today has this:
USA Today on SH's Guardian Interview wrote:I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail," he said. "There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."

It should come as no surprise that Hawking was not religious. In Hawking's 2010 book, The Grand Design, Hawking said a creator is "not necessary" in the narrative of how the world was created.
