S&R ships specalized equipment

Postby VoidStalker_WoE on Mon 20 Oct 2014 12:53

OK, I was reading up on the S&R sections and had the idea for a new system for specialized S&R ships. What about having extra 'Q' on S&R ships, but also allowing XO racks to be customized for an 'external' Q system? The 'XO-Q' would be a separate construct, specifically to allow dedicated S&R ships to provide quarters for a greatly increased crew, without taking up precious internal hs? Perhaps even larger versions could be mounted/built to use transit racks?

Two problems with this

Transit racks - rule E9.01: "Operable transit racks may transport ships or small craft, but not BS, SS, AF, or AP." (p. 59) Your proposed system would be either an SS or a BS.

XO racks. - rule XO.04.1: "(XO) racks can use munitions of any type researched by the empire...." (My emphasis.) (p. 295) Also, for XO Launch Racks, XOL.1 states that, while the smallcraft themselves can be carried indefinitely, any crew will be dead within 30 minutes due to exposure to drive-field radiation. (p. 296). Also note that the carrying capacity of even the XOL is quite small - 1 rack is required per boat bay point of small craft (or drone). And a 2bbp st fits comfortably into a 1 HS (Bsa) (the same size as a Qa or Qv), along with all the paraphernalia needed to launch/land and (un)load it, etc.

There is, of course, no reason why you cannot mount extra Qv (greater carrying capacity than a Qa or higher generation) on your specialist S&R ship, along with the maximum permissible number of boat bays (I'm not sure whether I'd use cutters rather than shuttles here - smaller carrying capacity, but more of them).

There are several issues at play here.

First, there is a realism problems:

* anyone outside of the hull of a unit would be fried by radiation. Small craft are protected by their own hull and support systems, but some sort of temporary structure would not be protected.

* the Q system is only a small part of the life-support and crew quarters equation. More or less, the actual "Q" is actually spread all over the ship and isn't a true component. We make it that way so we can simulate when damage is sufficient to reduce life support and ship control, we can model that by destroying the "Q".

* XO is little more than a connector and grapple. Small craft cannot be rearmed and refueled, and XO requires the ship to drop the DF so the crew can go outside and reattach munitions to the hardpoints. That is why it occupies no space, and also why it is limited to available surface area outside of the hull.

Second, there are game balance issues:

* If you could put temporary Q outside of the hull, why could I not fill it with pilots or ground troops? Why not temporary cargo space? Why not an actual shuttle bay? The game balance is that ships are a limited size. If you allow something like this, you are basically allowing them to be bigger than their size.

And a realism issue to this is that DF efficiencies are predicated on a certain mass. This circumvents those presumptions using game mechanics, when in reality that would not be possible.

* Game mechanics requires Q (as explained above). If we allow temporary Q, why not let crew rotate through the temp Q and not put any on the ship? Again, this type of thinking is using game mechanics to circumvent the realistic requirements that we've simplified for game play.

* We have a policy of having choices be meaningful and consequential. This would be "free HS" and thus a non-choice. Everyone would do it, making it a non-choice.

I'm sure I can come up with more but my break is over.

Hey Void, now that I'm back home and in front of the rules I wanted to let you know about the rules for overloading Q ... specifically designed for situations like S&R. AA.Q.02.2 and AA.Q.02.3 talk about overloading the life support temporarily and how long your ship can handle the excess crews.
