Ok, so I guess it's only needed for campaign gaming...

I want to use UltraSF for that part, but since it's so complex, I wanted to get used to tactical play first and for that reason try to play some scenarios from SF3 first. But I know that it's a beast of its own. ;-)

Not necessarily campaigns. The Stars At War supplement presumes that all battles start at the System Level, for example. As do ISW-4 and Insurrection. Crusade is one of the exceptions...

And in any case, it was only ever used in Classic Starfire (3rd edition). I was trying to point out that it is mostly unused even then. I think I used it once or twice, realized how useless that scale was, and boxed the map permanently.

Anything special with the interception maps? Never seen one, hence no idea of it...

The SFB maps of the era were in fact the same.

I'd suggest generally ignoring the interception scale/turns, unless there's planet/moon or colony evacuation.
