First Edition Computer Game

Postby Dustin_00 on Thu 19 Dec 2013 19:35

I'm getting the hang of Unity 2D.

I've roughed out the data structures.

I've roughed out the game play UI on paper.

The annoying/long part is going to be creating all the counters for the game -- oh, wait, I'll just take a picture of them with my phone and trim that down. Maybe it'll be a little easier than I think.

Anyway, I was going to punch in the Starfire I campaign and play against the computer -- which, since I'll write the AI might be kinda silly, but oh well.

I obviously have no rights to it, and since it's First Edition (pre-Classic) not sure anybody else will care. I *think* I'd like to just post it on GitHub for free to anybody, but I would still have to get permissions for that even.

If licensing can get cleared and people like it, then onward to Starfire 2, 3 (???), or maybe step up to Classic.

Still, it's a fun coding project and pushing me to use Unity3D more!

Surely you jest!?!

Yes, you would need to get Marvin's permission. More than likely, he'd rather distribute it through our website -- assuming he allows it. He has some standards for allowing fan software.

By all means, present what you've got to me and/or Marvin (he'll ask my opinion anyway). We've had several people over the years try and build a tactical battle program, but nobody has ever come through with something we can use/allow.

And if it's really good, Marvin has expressed interest in a business partnership in the past.

If you want to talk about this, either Private Message me or email me or Marvin (Marvin doesn't use the Private Messages on this board, so sending him one wouldn't work well). Marvin will make all the final decisions, but I'll answer in 24 or less.

I don't have much to show yet, so not much to talk about.

This is something I'm doing for fun for myself.

It's occurred to me I left out a couple of details:

1. It's based on Unity. This means once written, it runs on PC, Mac, Android, Phones, Tablets, AND WEB PAGES.

2. It will support single player to start, and I want to upgrade it to multiplayer / PBEM. The way the game handles events and logs them means you can record (and re-watch) a game, effectively you can reverse and forward all you want through a battle. This *should* make PBEM a snap and multiplayer fairly straight-forward.

3. I wholeheartedly support your review process.

Given Unity's Web Player ability and if I get to PBEM and/or multiplayer, I think just hosting it here could be fairly cool.

I saw another post from a while ago saying they were doing it in C++. Ug, that's a lot of work. I wrote one computer game last year that was probably around 3x bigger than this, so I think I will be able to at least get to the single player part -- I have no idea how Unity will handle online/multiplayer.

So this is a fun, simple coding project for me -- a very nice break from my day job.

It begins with a hex....

That I then hand cloned to make a megahex.

Next: automate the code to spam hexes to make a board... maybe something 28 x 34 -- that's the size of the original game board.

....which leads to a todo list:
Create Hex Board
Main Menu Above the Hex Board with 1 item: Shipyard!
Digitize chit images for use in...
List Ship Hulls (Name, Hull Size, chit icon, etc...)
Pick Hull
List Ship Components
Add Component
Delete Component
Move Component (fancy!)
Save Ship
Load Ship
Return to Hull Sizes

The todo map ends here. For now.

Next comes a column of hexes:

Camera is tilted to be looking at the board at an angle.

Column is from the far left column/corner of the screen.

Learned much Unity today and upgraded to UnityVS. Cuz breakpoints make your life easy.

Bed time now. But I feel a bit better about this.

I noticed the icons over on this discussion:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1330

They've been leveraged for now until anybody complains.

Shipyard should be complete next weekend.

You really should ask permission from the author. He visits the forum rather frequently.
