Counters as a font

Postby aramis on Tue 03 Nov 2015 19:41

I've done a font with the faces from the Original Starfire I & II countersheets (which were also used for 2E)

It can be found at http://aramis.hostman.us/fonts/
http://aramis.hostman.us/fonts/StarfireCountersFont.zip

What it requires: A word processor that supports .TTF and kerning. If you want color, it needs to support color, as well; in color mode, it can generate 2-color counters.

It supports numbering the counters, as well. 3 digit counter numbers are optimized for Macs - because that's what I use - but the characters are all in the standard encoding.

Several variations on 2-color planets are available using π∏ øØ œŒ æÆ ðÐ þÞ. These all are set to kern into the white planet counter.

36 point should produce 1/2" counters.

It wasn't. Scratch built.
The letters used are from a font of my own design, based loosely upon that presented in the SFTM by Franz Joseph Designs.

What software did you use to make the font?

Yeah, I'm finally back (again)! Sometimes, life (and 9yo son's) don't leave you time to play SF and earn a paycheck. :/

No, really! Matt actually made me an admin here!

The font itself was drawn in Fontographer.
I used Lemke Software's Graphic Converter to examine the counter scans closely.

This is totally cool and very well done. With a little tinkering in Word, I had an entire set of counters ready. Thank you for putting in this effort!

My pleasure. I wanted them for myself, so I figured, as long as Marvin and Cralis don't object, I'd share.

I'm thinking of doing an alternate (I'd label it as italics) with the minis painting guide plan drawings... I'll need to find space for a third color for each.

I realize that this is a bit of a necro-thread, but my question is directly relevant to the original topic.

Aramis, would you mind if I repackaged the glyphs from your font?

For my own use, I've written a program that takes the font and, depending how I tweak the code, will spit out individual 'characters' as .PNG files ready for use as tokens in a VTT. (I'm using MapTool (http://www.rptools.net), an open source, Java-based VTT.

What I have in mind for repackaging is two-fold: system maps & ship token sets.

First, I'm using the stars, planets, and warp points from your font to make up maps for 1st Ed. I currently have a numbered starfield hex grid ready for battles (48x32), the Galactic Hex Chart with all 66 systems positioned, and the Sol system done. When I finish the rest of the starting systems, I'd submit the completed MapTool file ("campaign framework") to SDS as a Game Aid for 1E play.

Secondly, I've got the program spitting out individual, numbered ship counter libraries in .PNG that are ready to be used as VTT tokens, complete with appropriate background colors. TFN and KON are done; for more, I just need select a new background color and run the program again. I'd submit these PNG sets to SDS as a 1E/2E Game Aid, and possibly (after appropriate permissions have been obtained) to the MapTools "Resource Library" archive where the tokens could be downloaded from within MapTool. (The ReadMe file for using this second source would also be another way to point people to the SDS site and maybe drum up some more interest in Starfire . . . .)

Credit in the ReadMe files where due, of course.

Skarn, this is really cool!

While i mostly play 3rd Edition tactical battles, i can definitely apprecite what you have done and the time/effort that you put into this. When you get a chance, can you post an image of what your Sol system looks like?

Since i haven’t played much 1st Edition, are all the systems portrayed on the 48x32 map?
