Generational Hulls, Fast Hulls, and Maximum Speed

I've got a design question....

I want to design a fast, basic generation CA with Ib engines.

Looking at the Construction Table, it looks like I'll have 67 hull spaces to play with. Max speed with Ia is 4, with a turn mode of 3. I will need 2 I per movement point.

As I understand it:

1. 8 Ia should give me a speed of 4
2. 10 Ia should give me speed 5.
3. 12 Ib should give me a tactical speed of 6 with a turn mode of 4, and a strategic speed of 3.

Is that right for a hull size of 67?

CA has a max speed of 4.
basic hull has -0.5
Ib is +1
fast hull is +1.

By my calculations, 4 + 1 + 1 - 0.5 = 5.5

C2.02 says that tactical speeds are always FRD. So your max speed is 5. However, strategic speeds are FRN so with 12 Ib you have a strategic speed of 3, because with a tactical speed of 5 it says that 1/2 speed fractions are rounded down. (thus the 2.5 becomes 2, instead of FRN, whereas 5.5/2 = 2.75 rounds to 3).

Cralis,

Thanks for the explanation; I'd missed the Con.04 discussion and the resulting -0.5 speed hit.

So, a CAbf with Ie engines would be 4 + 2 + 1 -0.5 = 6.5/3 using 12 Ie, whereas a standard 60 HS CA would be 7/3.5?

CAbf would be:
4 (CA Max) + 1 (fast) + 2 (Ie) - 0.5 (b) = 6.5/3.25 rounded to 6/3

Standard hull would be:
4 (CA Max) + 2 (Ie) = 6 (not 7) / 3

For comparison, a CAb would be:
4 (CA Max) +2 (Ie) - 0.5 (b) = 5.5/2.75 rounded to 5/3

And you need 13 Ie. 12 for speed 6 and one additional for the .5.

I do believe my head is going to explode....

Thanks for all of the feedback. The CA was supposed to be a CAf, which I think can achieve speed 7 with Ie: 4 (CA max) + 2 (Ie) + 1 (fash hull). That would require 14 engines, I believe.

I consider myself a pretty intelligent man, but Lordy how the intricacies of these rules can beat me down! If it wasn't for y'all on these forums, I'd be a hopeless wreck.... :)

So far from the examples it doesn't seem that bad. Who knows, SSF may convert me from playing 3rd ed.

Yes, sir.

Pffft give yourself more credit. You were VERY close. Remember, it's just how much time you spend. Some of us work on it 10, 20, or more hours a week (on the best weeks anyway) and we can quickly rack up a lot of time memorizing the rules.

You'll get there. According to the experts, it typically only takes a solid 80-100 hours to be an expert on a subject :)

I used to spend that much time just reading the tactical rules for 3rd ed. Once you started getting multiple types of missiles along with various fighters careful reading was needed to make sure that your Mg were loaded properly.

Then you'll like what they did for Solar, much less paperwork for missile loadout for Mg and Mgs, woot !
