I'd decided to limit the impact of combat small craft on general ship design, which meant that the pre-designed race I'd selected to have such things were only going to get fighters - but Berserkers are supposed to be scary and gamebreaking. Gunboats were therefore appropriate, and cutting beams were the only short ranged weapon I hadn't used elsewhere, for SL reasons. Triggered by an EL5 race, they should have technically been out of reach, techwise, but again, Scary.

I have no idea if the choice of particular systems and layout are 'good' or not, but weight of metal and technology should make it Interesting enough.

You might want to take another look at H1.03.1 and the first sentence of H1.03.3.

Xb is a military system that takes up 40% of your FT0's HS. This layout should therefore be built as an EX.

Yeah, when designing them I misread that rule as describing the breakpoint between 'freighter maintenance' and 'warship maintenance', which wouldn't apply to an X unit anyway.

They all got blown up this turn anyway, though.

More on the order of serendipity. That class was built specifically to monitor a forming warp point for Maximum Cheap.

And then when the formation finished, a Berserker popped out. Needless to say they didn't last more than a couple of rounds.
