Strikeboat.

The strikeboat is a Gunboat variant the deletes all internal weapon capabilities in favor of maximizing the firepower of their expendable munitions launches. This tradeoff leaves them terrifyingly vulnerable if they are caught under unfavorable circumstances, but equally powerful under favorable circumstances

Cost: Per standard gunboat of given generation
SRW: None. Deleted entirely.
LRW: 'Gunboat' bonus increased to +8, generation bonus increased to +4.5 (FRD) (Ref G7.04)
Does not suffer additional external ordnance movement penalties.

Availability: Make it a project in the Smcrft tree, under a knot. After the project is researched, you may make any new construction gunboat a strikeboat.

Superiority Fighter.

The superiority fighter is optimized for SRW knife-fighting, with an emphasis on killing other smallcraft. The external ordnance racks are removed in favor of dorsal and ventral internal weapons turrets. These may be fired independently, or in addition to the normal spinal SRW mount of a fighter.

Cost: Per normal fighter of given generation
LRW: None. Deleted entirely.

SRW: May fire EITHER +2 “fighter firing” modifier and double weapon generation bonus with the normal fighter SRW arc, OR no 'Fighter firing” modifier, ½ (FRU) weapon generation bonus, and the 300º 'gunboat SRW' arc.
Does not suffer any ordnance movement penalties.

Availability: Make it a project in the Smcrft tree, under a knot. After the project is researched, you may make any new construction fighter a superiority fighter

Existing squadrons may not be converted to their specialized variants – It'd be like trying to modify a F-14 into a F-18.

“Superiority Gunboats” and “Strike Fighters” are possible, but so non-optimal that there is no measurable bonus in game mechanics – just delete the LRW or SRW respectively, and do not reduce the cost.

Survey Shuttles
Availability: a twig off the Smcrft tree, with SLs not available until both Smcrft and either X or Xc trees are at/above a given level.

The survey shuttle has no cargo space to carry cargo or troops, and is, by shuttle standards, quite large. It is entirely devoted to sophisticated sensors and science instruments that nevertheless fall far short of the standards of a starship mounted science instrument. They are exceptionally capable at planetary surveys, capable of assisting in asteroid and hostile body surveys, and marginally useful in warp-point surveys.

Boat bay points: 4
Cost: 40 at alpha generation
Maintenance: 15% per tun
MP: 5, eventually increasing to exceed by one high level MSS capabilities of X/Xc
Survey points:
3 survey points per StMP, MSS equal to ship they are assisting during habitable surveys. There must be a star-ship-mounted science instrument surveying con-currently.
2 survey points per StMP, MSS equal to that of the the survey ship they are assisting during unlivable and asteroid surveys. There must be a star-ship-mounted science instrument surveying con-currently.
A survey shuttle may add a single survey point per turn if assisting a survey ship a in warp point survey. The number of survey shuttles that may assist a single survey ship is limited to the shuttle generation, IE, 1 at alpha generation, 2 at beta generation, 3 at i generation, and so on. Limit 50% greater (FRD) if assisting Xc.

Intent: Make really efficient planet and asteroid surveyors, that aren't totally useless during warp point surveys. Still, each WP survey point to come at a premium in terms of cost efficiency.

Bomber: A bomber is a shuttle designed to deliver bombs with great efficiency, while at the same time avoiding planetary fire. Useless for cargo or troop deliveries, they are a terror to PDCs. They are distinguishable from standard shuttles within weapons range.

Availability: SL5 in the Smcrft tree
Cargo capacity: 100, which may only be bombs. These may be dropped in volleys equal to EL/4 (FRU)
Cost: 20
Maintenance: 5% (1 MC/turn)
Boat bay points: 2
Damage Points: 3
Survey capacity - Nil

Intent – make a smcrft that serves Really Well in the bomber roll. 'Software Upgrades' in the number of bombs it can drop as the race using it ELs up. Perhaps increase the drop capacity of EL/3 (FRU,) as I'm not sure deleting all other utility and increasing the cost long- and short-term is worth the additional capabilities as written

Missile Assault Shuttle.
These assault shuttles remove their assault railguns and replace them with planetary-forces-style short range missiles. They are only good for a single, extremely short range pass, but have advantages against certain targets, notably buoys, PDC, space-stations and bases

Availability: Project in Smcrft tree
Cost/maintenance/BB points/damage points/cargo capacity: Per standard assault shuttle
Weaponry: Uses standard Ast weapon modifiers, but with a range of 0. Single use, may only target stationary units (buoys, PDC, space-stations and bases, MP-less starships) May damage large units. Deal double damage to buoys. These must be fired only after all other weapons have fired

Intent - standard assault shuttles are only good against other smallcraft and AP; these are only good against other targets, including some large units, and their range&fire priority makes them vulnerable while doing it.

Smallcraft Magazine.

A standard fighter bay or gunboat bay contain enough munitions for ten combat missions. The smallcraft magazine contains additional ordnance reloads to extend the endurance of embarked craft, in the occurrence those become exhausted.

Avalibility: Becomes available with (Bla,) after either the gunboat or fighter project
1 HS
20 MC
Contains 5 ordnance reloads, usable by any fighter or gunboat bay on the ship. Each load must be designated either a fighter reload or a gunboat reload. Recharges loads per standard rules.

Contest #6 was another full set of submissions (22 total I think), and took a LONG time to consider. Some of the submitted ideas were similar to each other, and some were simply more powerful variants/aspects of squadrons, but there were a number of unique ideas. It actually took me (Cralis) about a week to actually decide which of them I thought was the most unique and inventive, and even then I had to make some hard choices for my picks...

First place: #11 Strike Ops by Procyon! (8 tickets)

Edit: We wanted to say that this was very close. It lacked one thing: a squadron with Strike Ops should have a negative modifier to combat (it has strike ops and less weapons), so it almost went into the runner up slot. But we felt this filled the biggest hole in squadron operations and so it came out on top. But it was VERY close!

Runner Up: #16 Operation Ship Decoy by Dazrand. (4 tickets)

Marvin didn't put an official score up because he doesn't like the idea of specialist small craft. However, when I talked to him on the phone there were only two that he really felt were interesting: the strike ops craft, and this ship decoy. We talked about it for 15 minutes or so trying to figure out how the pseudo-science might work using deception ECM in a shuttle. So as far as things go, I'd say this caught Marvin's attention!

Honorable Mentions: Honestly there were at least 15 more good ideas (and 4 variations on the survey shuttle!), and I'd hate to have to choose. Everyone had some awesome ideas. We only decided on a few that we wouldn't want to use...primarily because of the way the rules are changing made a few ideas obsolete.

You can see the running totals for the mini-contests at viewtopic.php?f=52&t=1031#p9038

Congratulations Procyon!
