Scientists using cepheids to map the shape of our galaxy have discovered that it is most likely twisted. The article includes a rotating map graphic that clearly shows what they are observing.
This was too interesting to pass up!

I'll bet its from a previous merger. We'll get even more twisting when Andromeda (finally) gets here and does its merger.

Quite likely.
I recall a paper about 15 years back that mentioned earth not actually being in an orbit similar to the local neighborhood. A few dozen stars have similar patterns of movement... basically, we're possibly part of a minor globular galaxy that got swallowed...
